SA’S Unemployment

Thousands of South Africans are queuing in line for the R350 per month SASSA grant as the country is experiencing its highest unemployment rate since Statistics South Africa (STATS SA) created a survey in 2008.

According to the survey, South Africa had an unemployment rate of 32.5% in the last quarter of 2020. Although President Cyril Ramaphosa said in his State of the Nation Address that it has been reduced to 30.8%, the government is not doing enough to alleviate the situation.

The ANC was placed in power to end the most gruesome experiences of Apartheid. Amid the people of South Africa entrusting them with their futures, it is evident that greed has taken over their hearts and minds.

In 2019 the  World Bank revealed that South Africa is the most unequal country in the world. The youth unemployment rate in South Africa is also the highest at 55.75% - far ahead of second-place Italy, whose youth unemployment rate is 29.75%.

Wealth distribution in the country is also becoming increasingly worse. According to findings of a paper “Measuring the distribution of household wealth in South Africa” by Aroop Chatterjee, Léo Czajka, and Amory Gethin, approximately 3500 people own 15% of South Africa’s wealth.

That’s more than the bottom 90% (31.8 million people) of the country who own 14% of the country’s wealth.

The ANC government cannot be trusted. The looting and corruption must come to an end.
